New Standard English

The New Standard English course at the secondary level is, like its primary counterpart, based on the Ministry of Education's English curriculum for national development. Tried and tested through extensive research, the primary and secondary level books form a 'one dragon' (一条龙) integrated learning path, taking students from the very beginning of their English studies through to the completion of high school. With a wide range of books and supplementary resources, New Standard English is one of the most popular secondary-level English courses in China.

The course covers a wide variety of topics, using lively, authentic language at a moderate difficulty level, and reflects the topics that interest high school students. It presents learners with the English of international communication today, with a methodology using the latest ideas about language learning, influenced and guided by the context of learning in China.

New Standard English provides three separate courses for secondary schools: a four-level Junior High course, a six-level Junior High course, and a four-level Senior High course. The six-level Junior High course starts from ‘level zero’, to help students with little or no English proficiency gained from primary school get up to speed in secondary schooling.

The course has more than 300 different resources available, including:

  • Student's Books
  • Teacher's Books
  • Reading and Listening Books
  • CD-ROMs and audio cassettes
  • Online resources
  • Assessment books
  • Mock test supplements

Discover China

Discover China is a four-level Mandarin Chinese course, specially designed for beginner and low-intermediate level students. It employs a communicative and integrated approach to language learning. Emphasis is placed on communication in real contexts through pair work, group work and a variety of independent and integrated activities to help students become confident Chinese language speakers.

A communicative approach and real-life contexts provide learners with the tools they need to communicate naturally in Chinese. Structured and effective design, with activities moving from controlled practice to personalized tasks, facilitates effective learning. Student-centred 'inductive' grammar learning, supplemented with detailed grammar reference, goes beyond the traditional teacher-centred grammar class.

Discover China uses meaningful and integrated character writing practice through grouping characters with common radicals-these high frequency characters are presented within the context of the unit theme. Insights into Chinese culture, through the 'Cultural Corner' sections linked to the unit topics, promote a deeper understanding of this remarkable country and its language, while full-colour photos throughout the book illustrate this cultural context.

The course includes:

  • Student's Books
  • Workbooks
  • Teacher's Books
  • Audio CDs
  • Online support resources
